ELIGIBILITY

Applications are now open for the 2021 SCVS Youth Competition.   The competition is open to young accomplished high school violists students and under.


REGISTRATION FEE

Applicants are required to to submit the online application along with a $35 dollar non-refundable application fee.


COMPETITION 

First Round, by video:

The competition is open to young violists born after December 17, 2002.  The competition consists of a first round by video, final live round and winner’s recital described below.
 

REPERTOIRE FOR VIDEO RECORDING

  • Students must submit a recent video recording of two (2) selections up to fifteen (15) minutes in length consisting of the following:

         (1)  One selection from the standard viola repertoire

         (2)  One selection of solo repertoire by JS Bach (a movement from a suite or the Chromatic Fantasy)

  • Piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged, but not required.
  • Apply online by midnight on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021

Final Round at the Colburn School  

The final round (up to 10 competitors) will be held at the renowned Colburn School in Los Angeles.  Competitors who are chosen to advance to the final round are required to perform ONE selection under 12 minutes with piano accompaniment if required.  
 
The final round will be held on Friday afternoon,  December 17, 2021 starting at 1:30PM. 
 
The Colburn School is located at 200 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
 
Winner’s Recital, Live at the Colburn School

The winner’s recital will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 1:30PM.  The live round will be open to the public and may be live-streamed and recorded for publication purposes.


RULES

– Solos and all works originally written for viola and orchestra must be memorized
 
– Cannot reach age 19 by December 17 or be in first year of college, whichever comes first. 
 
– Any pieces that require piano accompaniment in the live round, must be accompanied. Competitors are required to provide a piano score to the accompanist. 
 
– Piano accompaniment in the video round is not required,  but strongly encouraged.
 
– All decisions of the jury are final.
 
– No students of Jury members are allowed to participate
 

PRIZES

1st place: $500

2nd place: $300

3rd place: $150

All winners will be presented at a winner’s recital at the prestigious AVS Festival at the renowned Colburn School in Los Angeles.  Winners and Honorable mentions will be presented at the final Winner’s recital at the Colburn School.

The list of successful candidates will be announced on the competition website by December 1, 2021.
