Caroline Buckman grew up in Virginia and studied viola performance at Arizona State University, under Dr. William Majors and earning her Bachelor of Arts. Caroline earned her Masters in viola performance from the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden, Germany. She moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and performed with the Santa Barbara, Pasadena, and New West symphonies, and the Long Beach and Santa Barbara Opera orchestras. She performed for top artists at award shows such as the Grammys, American Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Academy Awards. She was a sought-after recording artist for many popular movie and television productions and worked with composers such as John Williams, Michael Giacchino and Danny Elfman, and played alongside iconic musicians like Aimee Mann, Barry Manilow, Blake Shelton, Brian Wilson, Christina Aguilera, Harry Styles, Josh Groban, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Michael Bublé, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Patti LaBelle, Paul McCartney, R.E.M., and Reba McEntire. Off stage, Caroline enjoyed spending time with her close friends, hiking the many trails of Los Angeles, and traveling abroad. Caroline also loved spending time with her devoted boyfriend, Mitch and her cherished spaniel, Iischa.

In 2018, the Los Angeles viola community lost our beloved colleague, teacher, and friend Laura Pearson. Laura performed regularly with orchestras including the LA Philharmonic and the South Bay Chamber Orchestra, and as a session player she recorded hundreds of scores for movies and television. In addition to her virtuosic artistry, Laura was treasured for her kindness and generous spirit. Laura taught at ViolaFest in 2017 and 2018 and her insightful, informative, and fun classes were an absolute favorite with ViolaFest participants. In honor of her legacy as an artist and educator, The Southern California Viola Society has established a ViolaFest tuition scholarship fund for students who share Laura’s characteristics of hard work, curiosity, dedication, camaraderie, and love of the viola.
